Hi Sheepie,
I like your post a lot. It gives me exactly what I want to hear about Florida. I am originally from Europe, have 2 bachelors from Europe, and just finished BS in Business few days ago from Indiana University. As you can see from school where I finished, I was last 5-6 years in Indiana, but would like to move to Florida. I am currently working retail but want to go in to the insurance field. I am interesting to work as an actuary in the Insurance company. Do you have any idea how much job opportunities are in your area for the actuaries in the Insurance companies? What insurance companies you have in your area?
Please advise and thank you so much.

Hello fellow former Ohioian!!!

After years or researching and going through rough times with ill parents we finally made it to Florida just a little over 2 years ago now.

Key in moving here and finding the right spot for you is researching and foot time in the towns on your list.

There is some hidden gems if you look long enough.

My suggestion is to find several towns that fit your needs, criteria etc and visit each of them.

Appears this op did well in her homework. Congrats to you!

We just had some friends we met through my kids school friends who were from Akron, Ohio and moved here in the middle of the school year last year. They paid off their lease and moved back to Akron. Did not like it here at all. Akron is not too far from the OPs area. Daughters friend skyped her yesterday and said he wished they were still here in Florida.

To each its own.

Nice to be sitting on the lanai eating BBQ and swimming year around when family in Ohio is stuck in snow or freezing to death.

They send us pictures of their kids in the snow and we send them pictures of our kids at the beach, Disney, Universal, Legoland etc.

Lots of free family vacations we have given out in 2 years.

We moved here from Central Ohio in June, and I love living in Florida, even in the heat and humidity of summer. I am REALLY looking forward to this Winter, checking the freezing weather in Ohio and chuckling to myself as I sit on the beach. I love being surrounded by tropical vegetation and having the ocean five miles away. The main negative for me (and it is a minor one for most people) about this part of Florida (Vero Beach) is that there are very few song birds except mockingbirds. This was a huge surprise to me. Locals say that more will be around in Winter, but for right now it's eerily quiet in the mornings - even the abundant mockingbirds are not singing this time of year. This fact is not a game-changer for me, I would never move back to Ohio, but if you are an avid birder, it is something to keep in mind when considering a move to Florida.

You may be able to find a position with a homegrown property insurance company... of which there are several throughout the state.

If you have an adjusting license you can also find work in the offices of a national company... such as State Farm, Geico, etc.

I wish I could answer the job questions, but really don't know much about specific job markets.

SeaLark7, I hope you brought some winter clothes. Several people told us to leave it all behind, but at least where we are, there are some pretty cold days in the winter. And what's more, whereas 50F feels warm in OH, in FL it feels much, much colder. I don't know if it's the humidity or the acclimation to a warmer climate, but I find that I can't handle cold temps like I used to.

Don't discourage birders!! Florida is great for bird watching. This site isn't working for me right now, but www.floridabirdingtrail.com/‎ has lots of info about the Great Florida Birding Trail. We had friends come to visit who spent quite a bit of time bird watching in the preserves around here and they were quite impressed. I'm not sure about songbirds though. I do hope they find soon though.
