Why is the gulf side the better side? We are looking at both and would love to hear why you feel that way. Obviously everyone's taste is different but I like lots of input. We own a home in Brooksville (Hernando Co) that my MIL lives in. My husband is a boat captain and wants to be on the water (canal) so we are looking for a place we can get an affordable lot to build on. But my big concern is bugs (I'm evidently a noseeum magnet and have been eaten alive when visiting the gulf side, particularly southwest Florida) and getting good healthy food that I'm used to in California. When visiting Brooksville the grocery stores were limited so I didn't get a good feeling. A safe area is important too.

I like the west coast because of calmer surf and a less crowded coastline. I'm next door to Brooksville
in Spring Hill. There are several Publix supermarkets, Winn Dixie, Wal-Mart super centers and one wal-mart food only store, Sav-A-lot. SR50 (cortez blvd) has exploded with new stores and shops basically ffrom just west of the suncoast expressway and down to west of Mariner.. You may be able to find lots in Hernando Beach with gulf access. In fact the channel out to the gulf was recently modified for deeper drsft vessels and its wider too.

Thanks for the info! I've liked the Spring Hill area when we have been through there. Not sure I can get the food I'm used to there though (I'm a California health food nut!) but I know it's getting better. I read a post here dated 2012 that said the canals in Hernando Beach didn't have gulf access yet but that was a few years ago so I will need to research that. We looked at a few canal lots in Hudson but I'm not hearing great things about that area. And I think the flooding is bad there too.

Default Hernando ..... or Hernando COUNTY.

We moved to Hernando from Indiana because Hernando did not look FLORIDIAN, but more what I'm used to. But AFTER we moved, we discovered Hernando and it's area to be depressed financially. We have two Walmarts, an empty mall, and businesses are closing daily. We have lots of snowbirds because we're located mid-way to Orlando and Tampa. The medical arena consists of doctors who must have graduated by the skin of their teeth and they are NOT top notch or high caliber. The two hospitals are filthy and backwoods in their procedures. Even the CAT scan machine has dust and cobwebs on it.

Hernando county has 3 Walmarts (19,Cortez and rt589)along with all the other big box stores and just about every fast food joint one can think of.
One tiny little beach called Pine Island that usually has a full parking lot,
Plenty of affordable homes.

Sounds like you didn't do a lot of research prior to moving. With the wealth of information available online, its pretty easy and quite important to find out as much as you can about an area prior to uprooting your entire life. I looked up every minute detail about my area and probably knew more than some of the residents by the time we made the move.

And 3 hospitals. I think someone is talking about the town or Hernando and not the county.

The thought crossed my mind but the ops description of what he expected to find in Hernando either points to Hernando county or some one who has done very little research on the village of Hernando.

.I found an awesome looking place in Hernando Fl that I wish and hope I can call home.....I'm thinking about applying for the apt....but I don't want to live where there's no diversity....I want to live in a safe neighborhood where there are....white...black...Hispanics...Asians...and other ethnicities..faiths...walks of life.. with all types of restaurants and flavors from here and different countries...
stores..churches...beaches..bowling alleys...night life...I'm an active Senior (60yy) and like to meet interesting people....so...tell me world....what could I expect if I live in Hernando Florida??....Thank you!!!
