Exactly.

Despite being only about 30 minutes outside of Orlando, our little area of Mount Dora/Sorrento/Plymouth feels like a completely different world..

Yep. The further you get from a metro area the more differences you experience.

Mt. Dora is such a nice town. We miss Renningers.

I beg to differ with some of the opinions - we are a working couple in our 50s - live in Sarasota County 2 miles from the beach in a house that is under 300k - great schools - my son is in Pine View School - rated 6th in the country - yes, we have snowbirds and humidity but its not that bad - life is great here! Way better than up North.

For those who cant hack a part, or all parts, of Florida life tend to blame the entire state and everyone in it for their lousy experience.

They were so happy telling friends and family about the new great lifestyle they are going to live but when something goes sour its hard to swallow for them as they have to go back and tell them how terrible all of Florida is.

Easy to say when you are well-to-do. The most we could ever hope for is a $60K mortgage and that is at least four years down the road when our credit is more established. For now, we have to rent and we have $750 a month to work with. I also know very well that (aside from manufactured homes) that $60K in Florida will only buy a dump at best. In NE Indiana, $60K will buy a 2-bedroom ranch home in the nice part of town.

You don't particularly need to be "well-to-do" to buy a 300k home. A proper saving plan and good credit will make your mortgage payment quite affordable. We bought our $200k home 7 years ago when our combined income was only about $60k. That's 25k for one and 35k for the other. FAR from well-to-do.

The metro areas are just as real as any other part of Florida. What a strange thing to say.

I disagree. The metro areas have many more recent transplants which leave that "transient" vibe.
The metro areas are way more congested and crowded than non-metro areas.
Metro areas have a higher amount of criminal activity since the population is higher than non-metro areas.

The "real" Florida is not congested, does not have nearly the amount of transplants, has less crime. The people in the "real Florida" tend to be more laid back, less hurried, less stressed, friendlier than those in large metro areas.

These factors play out in every state.
