Your link shows top base pay of $41,975 but does not explain the difference between top base pay and regular starting salary nor how you would get this. Could it be someone coming in with military experience might start at a salary higher than most recruits? I think comparing normal starting salary is more appropriate since it is not influenced by other factors that might also affect the starting salary in Florida counties.
The $44,744 you mention as $45,000 also includes holiday pay, uniform allowance, shift differential, etc.
Once again I went with base salaries but most county sheriffs also receive shift differential and holiday pay.
Your fudging of numbers increases when we get up to 5 years, you say $75,000 but I see your link says $56,609 top base pay after 5 years. Once again we don't know what the difference between top base pay and regular base pay is. Hernando County Sheriffs also get pay increases, there is room for advancement and I know this is a common misconception but many employees in Florida are unionized including I believe every sheriffs department. Of course smaller departments are not going to have as much room for advancement as a 35,000 member department, that is just common sense.
The thread was about whether or not it was cheaper to live in Florida and in many places it is and salary in some fields matches the salary of much more expensive cities. Of course not all fields will pay as much and some places will be more expensive, there are too many factors and anyone that makes a blanket statement that Florida is cheaper or more expensive is not even beginning to look at all the factors involved.
I believe what I posted does back up the fact that it is very possible to make similar pay even in Hernando County for some lines of work and the cost of living is much, much, much less.
You should probably do a better job of reading thoroughly. My source for salary is from the NYPD website. The beginning pay I mention is while at the Police Academy, and not in the field. It includes holiday pay, uniform allowance and night shift differential pay. There is no "fudging" of the numbers since it clearly states when you clear the 5 year mark (5.5 years) the base increases to $76,488 with a total of $90,829 when factoring in the same criteria factored with base pay. Despite your assertions, no cop in podunk Hernando County Florida is going to come anywhere close to making 70K-90k after a few years on the force and despite tax differences still no where near the net standard of living provided by the NYPD.

Exactly, and where does one suppose new hires for that position will land in terms of salary range?

The salary range starts at $39k. What do you expect? Everyone to come in on a job and make
the top salary? Be realistic.

What I really wonder is why, over the past 20 years plus, have more and more people decided to live in FL rather than a place where they would make more money?

Let's talk about your $85k a year cop in NYC.
His State income tax is around 8k a year. His city tax is another couple of thousand. If he lives in Nassau or Suffolk County (Long Island) his property taxes are about $12k a year. A house will cost him $400k. Heating that house in the winter will cost him $500 a month for oil and that is on the low end. Chalk up another $2k a year for that expense. He also gets to live in America's most expensive city. So far the poor guy is down to $61,000 and he hasn't even paid his electric bill, one of the nations highest, and his other normal life bills. Let's not get into sales taxes, sin taxes and overall quality of life.

What has your guy have with his $85k a year job except the headache of living in NYC in the first place.

Then he sees the ad on the internet.............

Obviously if someone is a construction laborer in New York, they'll make more money in Florida as a lawyer. The problem is, who would want to leave New York making $85k a year as a police officer, to become a Podunk County Sheriff making less than half of that?

Do you even consider the difference in the cost of living and quality of life between NYC and Hernando County FL?

Seems to me that if you start at 41k in NYC and 39K in Bradenton you are going to be doing better with $ in Bradenton.

Edit to say I checked in Sarasota and the entry level salary there - with no prior experience is $38,042.

Sheriff's Office Law Enforcement - Salaries (2011)

Hernando County Sheriff's Office Hernando Start salary: $39,401

The NYPD and many other agencies "up north" are also unionized, meaning at least somewhat regular raises, better benefits and not having the fear of being fired because "I didn't like the way you looked at me" thanks to Florida's employer friendly/employee unfriendly labor laws. Furthermore advancement opportunity is a quantum leap beyond what any "podunk" Florida agency can provide. I have a neighbor who has a brother who has been with the NYPD for 10 years, now is a second grade Detective earning around 100K. One can start advancing pretty quickly in the department if one chooses, so the base pay really isn't a reality for very long for most. Similarly high pay brackets don't exist in Florida unless one becomes a Police Chief or high ranking official within a larger big city department. The smart move would appear to be northward if planning a career in law enforcement
