We all enjoy the state and most of us have pets. Tell us why you have a pet and would you get another if the one you own dies?

I do have a 15 year old female golden/chow mix, great pet. Won't get another dog. Also 14 African Cichlids and texas terror.....fish are easy to take care....

Have a precious Bichon Frise and love her dearly. She is the sweetest, best little dog I've ever seen. She is 11 now and in great health, her mother passed last year at 17, so hopefully my bichon will live a long time as well. When she does go, I don't think I will get another pet. I don't think I could ever find another one as good as she is and DH and I want to travel.

Default Parrots & Dogs

I have 2 parrots, 2 dogs and one old bag-of-bones cat.

The parrots will be around a long time (parrots have very long lifespans...30, 40, 50 years is not uncommon - some can get even older).

I'm a dog person for sure - I think I'll always have 2 dogs. I've always had big dogs and they've always been mutts...I take in the throwaways!

I love my cat and think cats are great - but this will be my last one.

All in all, my small zoo runs quite well - everyone gets along !

I have a 5 year old lab mix that I love..... I can't even begin to imagine what I would do if something happened to him.

I like cats too but have had bad luck with the last two- the first one couldn't adjust to the dog and after a year of him not adjusting I sent him to live with a relative who loves cats and has no dog.

The last one I adopted at 8 wks old and the darn creature preferred my carpeting to his litter box. I tried everything from different litter to locking him in a tiled room with his litter box. The moment I let him out he would use the carpet again. So after a year, I gave him to one of those crazy cat ladies who has about 10 cats and doesn't care where they go to the bathroom.

I'd like to try another kitten but I'm afraid the odors left by the other one will make it attractive to continue using the carpet....

I wish I had the patience for parrots. I love them.

Yes, parrots are definitely not to be entered into lightly - they are a lot more work than a cat or a dog.

As a result, many people give them up after a few years. That's how I got my second one and I've been offered others too (once people find out you have one...), but can't take on any more pets right now - it wouldn't be fair to the ones I currently have.

They can be really sweet and cute when they're babies but as they reach sexual maturity, they can become difficult and take, as you said, patience to work through it. Getting bitten by a medium or large size parrot is no joke - it's similar to being bitten by a medium or large size dog.

They're the only pets I know of that can speak english though, and that's a really interesting trait!
