I'm in the same boat as you... I'm new here but I feel obligated to defend the state because of how much it has changed my life for the better... People exaggerate so much about the negatives of Fl, it is frustrating...

People complain about it being hot but its not like that should be a surprise to anyone... People complain about the crime in "FL" all of the time like the entire state of FL is infested with crime, its ridiculous...

Not the entire state, but a good part of it has Moderator cut: English Only crime. Places that were low in crime back in the 90's when I came here are now loaded with it. And where is it you live? Maryland, is that here in FL?

That might be true around some big cities I just have imagining that all of these suburbs and random rural areas throughout FL are infested with crime... I mean FL is freakin huge, its not like in MD were there is precious space for people to go to get away from the city...

I live right outside a major metropolitan city down here and the crime statistics are extremely low compared to DC, Baltimore and the surrounding areas...

Also I moved here to JAX 2 months ago, I just haven't updated my profile yet...

Yeah. But that's not saying much. It's not great, either. I guess it depends on your tolerance level.

In fact, D.C. has a crime index of 670

Jacksonville's is 583.

That's not an enormous difference.

If I'm thinking of "paradise" I am not thinking "better than D.C."

Florida crime was actually pushing record highs in the early 90s and pushing record lows in the mid 2000s...crime has gone up very slightly since 2006 but in the single digit percentage range. I don't know about SW Florida but on our coast, almost every area was plagued with burglaries and thefts in the 90s. Now many of these same areas are below average, even with recent increases. The only area around here that really didn't show a decrease is Sunrise, and crime was not necessairly up, just steady from the early 90s. Once again, this is just one section of the state but I know that Florida crime in general is down from the 90s. Like any other places, a few areas decline but Florida as a whole has not become more dangerous since the 90s.

Violent crimes per 100,000 people:

Baltimore 1,631 per 100,000 @ 80 square miles

DC 1,347 per 100,000 @ 68 square miles

Jacksonville 1,022 @ 875 square miles

Also Jacksonville is that much bigger than DC or Baltimore but has less than double the residents... So the crime is spread over a much larger area statistically... In reality it is concentrated in a few select areas...

Cape Coral for example was a really low area, with an index of 32 in 2004. Now it has grown to 91. Murders were unheard of, now there has been almost a dozen since. SWFL has gotten a lot worse in the last few years.

I can't rep you again, but I made this same point earlier in the thread and it was largely ignored. (People were going on and on about "rude people" at the time).

A site that "competes" with City-Data states the following, as of 2006 over 2005:

Despite the increase, the crime rate per 100,000 population (which totaled 3,227) is lower than the crime rate per 100,000 population in 2002 (which totaled 3,517). Statistics reveal that the violent crime rate in Cape Coral has continued to remain fairly constant over the past four years; however, the rise in property crimes is contributing to the biggest increase in the index crime rate increase. The areas hardest hit include auto-theft burglaries and burglaries related to new construction."
THIS article states that crime went DOWN in Cape Coral in 2008 vs. 2007:

Cape Coral Second Safest City in 2008 « SouthWest Florida Real Estate News

Major crimes – murder, rape, robbery, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft – declined by 9 percent in Cape Coral, according to statistics compiled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Cape was second safest among Florida cities with a population of over 150,000, behind only Port St. Lucie. The city’s population was 164,523 in 2007 and 165,774 in 2008, according to FDLE.

These statistics reflect a similar drop in major crime countywide that has already been reported. Major crime in unincorporated Lee County dropped 7 percent and 3 percent in Fort Myers in 2008, according to FDLE statistics."

It is also important to note that Cape Coral's population went up nearly 50% since 2000. More people = more crimes in TOTAL. What matters is crimes per capita.

Again, people yearning for the "good old days" of Florida vis-a-vis "crime" are living in fantasy worlds. It was so much worse in the 80s and 90s. MAYBE, just MAYBE, the 24/7 news cycle, saturation of information and news media online, and hysterical people on message boards pontificating about their own personal experiences with crime contribute to the perception that there is so much more to be fearful of NOW as compared to THEN.
