Quality fish used even to be the cheaper option over beef and poultry. These days I look forward to salmon season, but there are no real deals year 'round. Dungeness crab season used to come with low prices too. Not anymore.
It may be that I'm more conscious of price differences that makes me avoid buying certain items nowadays. Squid! Squid is expensive now! Really? Squid? Ditto beef liver. Skirt steak because of the fajita craze. I need to start growing leeks and fennel again too. And shallots while I'm at it.
not too long ago (maybe 6 months or so) wild Salmon was about $8 a lb and farm Salmon about $4 or $5. now, farm is $8 to $9 and wild closer to $15.00.
Cooking Oil, Butter & such has also increased quite a bit.
But these you can use in smaller portion... not cut out totally.
actutally butter was higher about a year or so ago. Here it went to, as high as $4.50 a lb. I tried switching back to margarine. That lasted about a week. Now it is running about $2.50 lb and Aldi's usually has it for under $2.
I will give up other things before I stop purchasing high quality food.
If a good steak at the grocers cost 10.00 then so be it.
I also love my lobster and will buy it fresh.
I will however cut out going to the movies as often or taking more than one long road trip in the summer so I can continue to eat well.
Nuts to the current price of nuts. I used to buy them from Costco (mixed nuts), at $12.99 or so. Now they are $15.00 there, so I buy them in smaller quantities at Trader Joe's. Beef has gone sky high here, but chicken breast is always available on sale for $1.99/lb.
I am happy to see coffee prices have come down a bit, since I would have paid any price.
My husband loves thick sliced applewood smoked bacon--Wright's is the brand I think--and it is usually $6-$8 per pound. But he works hard, home before me and cooks most nights, so I think he deserves his bacon. We have cut our portions like nmnita and cut back in other areas. I will cook with bacon occasionally, but do not eat it by itself--so DH gets my portion!
With generally less grocery shopping because of gas prices find we eat in more and make stuff to freeze like lasagna... Buying less meat generally and fresh produce like brussels sprouts, avacadoes, bananas .
We really haven't cut down on too much except for our portion sizes. One dinner usually lasts two nights and sometimes a lunch is included in that. We buy most of our meats/chicken/fish from Costco, along with milk, butter, and eggs, but utilize our local farm markets for fresh produce. We rarely eat anything canned or packaged. Ice cream is purchased only on sale or we go out for it, which is what I prefer so it is not in the house.

I can't think of anything that I've stopped buying, but I do know that I'm muttering curse words under my breath, often, when looking at some of the new prices.

My use of red meat and other animal products such as pork/cheese has dropped significantly due to:
1. health reasons (cholesterol, high BP, weight gain, dairy allergies resulting in inflammation/joint pain)
2. costs (see below)
I've found that the more vegetables/legumes/beans I eat, the healthier and thinner I am, so it all works out rather nicely.
A can of beans of 16 oz. for $.69 gives me all the protein I need versus $4.99.lb. and up for a steak or ground round.
I love cheese, but it doesn't love me (especially the yummy bleu cheese and other moldy types), so it's rare around my house any more.
