I always check for dents. I won't buy even a slightly dented can--it's rare that I come across one and there's always a ton of ones to choose from that are dent-free. Bulging, leaky, rusted...no way!
I wouldn't buy a bulging can. But then, I've never even SEEN a bulging can.
I've only seen them once. I was in a tiny Asian grocery store in Starkville, Mississippi in the early 90s. There on the dusty shelf were several cans that were misshapen--the tops & bottoms bulging. Mr hp & I looked at each other & slipped out of the store.
On the other side of most of the above posters, my late husband absolutely loved dented cans. It was the one thing he economized on (well, he also bought MREs to eat before he met me, lol.) This is the same guy that bought a small plane, so dented cans were definitely not a financial necessity. I think it was a holdover from his childhood, when his family really had to scrimp.
sounds just like my dad; he would splurge on many things but thought nothing of buying food items at the best price he could. If that meant damaged (dented cans or cans with almost no labels) he purchased them. I remember the time he bought a case of canned plums. No one in the family liked canned plums but he got it cheap at a wholesale place that offered great deals on damaged items. Well, as far as I can remember none of those dozen cans ever were eaten.
You'd think as a dent checker I'd care about expiration dates but I rarely check those. If I do it's on fresh or maybe canned stuff - never boxes. Even so, I've eaten a lot of expired stuff
