I've been a big fan of pistachios for the last couple years - mostly as a relatively low fat snack with the advantages of nuts.
I get the unshelled Wonderful brand in big bags - and I've noticed the quality has gotten much worse over the last 6 months. First it seemed that more and more weren't "opened" and are extremely hard to crack so I'd end up destroying a bunch just trying to get them open. But now many are just plain rotten - dark colored and nasty tasting if you happen to eat one without looking first! Yuck!
What have others noticed? Is there another major brand that is better or is this just off-season or a bad season and all brands are bad right now?
My husband eats the Wonderful pistachios in the shell every night. He has not complained of any difference. I buy the 24oz bags at Walmart. Last week I had to buy the Great Value brand as they were out of the Wonderful bags. I'm not sure how those will be.

Thanks for the response. I get the 3 pound bags at Sam's Club - maybe it is the particular distributor? I'm in Illinois.
Very interesting....that's fine, them talking about sanitation - but isn't there any quality control going on? I'm not talking about 1 or 2 nuts in a bag - I'm talking a dozen or more...in EVERY bag. They should be rejecting whole batches.
The ones we got from Costco were fine. If there is a large percentage of bad quality ones then either return to store or complain to the manufacturer. They take this seriously.
Red pistachios - yum! Not quite as big as the modern ones but more flavorful. So your fingernails turned red and people called you names. It was worth the hassle. Sears and Hudson's used to sell them by the pound.
