My husband and I are going to Bonefish Grill for our anniversary tomorrow night and I was looking at their menu. What is the difference between trout and cod? I like mild fish but have never had either of these.

Trout comes from fresh water and cod comes from the ocean. Cod is a thick white fish. It does not have a strong flavor. I don't think I have ever had trout.
Myself I would choose rainbow trout, more of a delicacy on a special occasion. It is eaten in a variety of styles. It's just a better flavor for me than most fish ( rainbow trout, perch, trout, halibut have a milder taste)My favorite ways are steamed rainbow trout with baby potatoes, butter and strong whipped horseradish or smoked rainbow trout.
Rainbow trout does have a more distinct flavor than cod, which is almost tasteless by itself, though the taste of rainbow trout is still quite mild. Cod can be quite chunky as some have said.
Cod is a "meater" tasting fish to me. Both are very mild. If you don't mind a little spice - their Bang Bang Shrimp appetizer is awesome!
Cod is used a lot for authentic fish and chips. I make a pecan crusted trout recipe that is really good too.
Happy anniversary!
I stand by what I said about the shrimp - I know people who get it for their entree, as it's a pretty generous portion for an app - but on a more serious note, yes, for real fish and chips, cod is the gold standard.
Both fishes are good, it really just depends on how you want them prepared. It's really pretty hard to go wrong at Bonefish. I have never had a bad meal there.
And yes, happy anniversary!
Note: Wednesdays they have a special on the shrimp. Six dollars. Enjoy.
