I'm not sure if I should eat the peach butter. It looks delicious, but the button is not indented, it's slightly popped. The woman who gave it to me reuses the same jars every year, could that be the reason?

I couldn't find any info online, so I appreciate any help.

Sometimes a "white lie" is ok...

I wouldn't eat it.

As a note, the jars and rings are designed for reuse. The lids are not.

That button on the lid is there for a reason. Pay attention to what it is telling you.

Under the circumstances you describe, I would not eat the food. Tell her you appreciated her gift, tell her you enjoyed it if you feel that she needs to hear that, but discard it.

Oh shucks. But many thanks for the responses, I wasn't sure if I needed to toss it.

If you have a compost bin, it won't be a total waste...

The very sickest I ever got was about 24 hours after consuming a healthy (ha-ha) quantity of a friend's delicious, home-canned piccalilli. It was so good, I simply could not stop eating it, and since my friend had several jars of it, he encouraged me to gorge myself. But the next day...fever, chills, explosive at both ends. Never sicker.

I don't eat home-canned anything anymore.

WHY????!!!! Please don't do this.

I was once given a jar of home-canned venison mincemeat, and while I LOVE mincemeat---- canned meat -- I just couldn't. Fortunately a friend took it off my hands.
