Tonight was round one of the family's blind cocoa/hot chocolate taste test. We started with Swiss Miss, Penzeys proprietary mix, and Starbucks hot cocoa mix. Tomorrow night and the night after, we will test Abuelita's, Hershey's syrup, a Peruvian chocolate drink made from bar chocolate, Hershey's cocoa from scratch, and a Dutch cocoa imported from the Netherlands also made from scratch. There were a lot of surprises so far, to say the least! Inspired me to post this poll, so what is the best in your household? If other, please specify in your reply!

I love me some Hot Chocolate. And have jumped around, trying to find the best. Not super happy with anything I currently have, so nothing to contribute to this thread yet.

I did try a Mexican style hot choco last year--Abuela's or something like that. Was very disappointed.

I want to know the answer to this question too.

Currently I just use Hershey's powder. Can't stand Swiss Miss as it is sickeningly sweet.

I'd love some high end chocolate powder. It's a winter treat and I want it to be special.

Tried store brand cocoa powder and it barely even tastes like chocolate.

Nestle Rich Milk Chocolate

Three heaping spoonfuls in a 12oz cup, add just enough water until
it is a 1/4" from top then add a half shot of Amaretto & top
off with Redi Whip

To be fair, Mexican hot chocolate isn't really comparable to our hot chocolate. It is nearly unsweetened, and typically not pleasing to those who are used to the "regular" stuff. IMHO.

My favorite hot chocolate? Not Penzey's - I won't buy from them. Otherwise, any of them where I can add any of the following:

Triple sec

Heavy cream
Peppermint schnaps

I'm anxious to try one with some kind of salted caramel flavored alcohol, but don't particularly want to buy an entire bottle of that stuff.

Thanks and reps have gone out to everyone who posted. I haven't voted yet myself, since we are still exploring. Penzeys was the most expensive variety we have bought so far, and was at the bottom of the rankings from the first round. The jar states to put a heaping tablespoon to one cup of heated milk. I did so, and tasted it, and it was so bland I doubled the intensity and added another heaping tablespoon. Still lacked flavor, by a mile, to the Swiss Miss and the Starbucks. My kids actually thought it was the Swiss Miss, and rated it the least tasty of the three. I asked them which they thought each one was, and also to rank them by flavor.

Like I stated earlier, the results have been interesting so far. And it's also interesting that we have a preconceived idea of which brands should taste better or worse than others. Looking forward to tonight's round. I'll have to add that Paula Deen recipe to the roster too! It sounds incredibly rich and sinful.
