When American cheese was developed, it was at a significant discount to cheddar and other hard cheeses. Now, it is almost as much. Why buy it?

I do like the deli American cheese for when I make scrambled eggs. It's my guilty pleasure.

Get a clue y'all. The deli sliced American cheese is the exact same thing as the packaged slices. I can like it sometimes.
when I was a kid, I loved white bread, Miracle whip and yellow American cheese sandwiches.
I still like it for grilled cheese.

^^^^This.

I actually really like white American cheese from the deli. The grocery next door to where I work carries Boar's Head deli products and sometimes I'll go there and buy 1/4 lb each of white American cheese and roast turkey breast and eat that for lunch, sometimes as lettuce wraps, sometimes just plain with a tiny bit of mayo.

And sometimes just the cheese by itself. Love American cheese.

Only clue I got is that the deli cheese doesn't taste like plastic and has a firmer texture. If it tastes the same to you, by all means keep buying the plastic wrapped ones,. I'll stick with the deli.

Hmmm. My daughter recently bought some Borden Singles to put on hamburgers. In fact, some are still in the fridge.

They are absolutely nothing like the sliced deli American cheese. They're pretty plastic-y and ,waxy.

I suppose it depends on which brand you buy, deli or pre-sliced? My mother used to buy deli sliced Land-O-Lakes white American. I remember it as pretty much the same as the Boar's Head that I buy today.

(But then, FWIW, I never liked Miracle Whip---ugh!)

It might be, but the texture is different. I don't like the individually wrapped slices, but I will eat Cooper Sharp American.
