One's artsy/brainy - going to study biomedical photography, the other, just plain old-fashioned brainy - probably phd in some academic niche still to be determined.

Mod Guy, I like parts of Queens - I spent my early years in Flushing and it was like growing up in a small town. Not at all like it is now. Im in touch with everyone I went to elementary school with! I just really disliked Woodside - I even lived on the same street as Chelsa...so I think I know pretty much where she's coming from....much rather be here than there. I have an old friend who lives in downtown Astoria and he's perfectly happy raising his kids there, so I guess depending on the neighborhood, it can be a really fun place to be.

I guess it depends on what you ate looking for - I'm not being slick fauve but I have never heard of downtown Astoria - where snouts does he live that would tell me better - I grew up in Astoria and it is verydiffernt - I find it too congested - but if you go all the way down to 19th and 20th ave it is still nice from the 20's all the way up to the 40's but it is extremely inconvenient for transportation and is super expensive there.

Wow, fauve, seems like your kids are smart and bright...just like mom, no doubt!

Yeah, of course there are nice parts of Queens as well as undesirable areas...but I guess one can say pretty much the same thing about 90% of the places around the country. I'm a longtime Upper West Sider myself but I absolutely adore Forest Hills Gardens, Douglaston, parts of Bayside, etc. Many people are surprised to know that there are lovely Tudors and Colonials in some parts of Queens fetching in the multimillions in home prices!

I know what you mean about "downtown" Astoria. Chelsa, it's probably areas around Steinway/Broadway, etc. I once taught at a business school there.

Regarding the topic of the thread, yeah, the longer period of heat/humidity in Fort Lauderdale can be a problem for some of us - athletes or not. Each of us must determine what set of pros and cons works best for us. Fort Lauderdale might be too humid for someone, but Tempe, Arizona may work out fine! Manhattan with all its cultural, entertainment, shopping options may be the place to be for those who can afford it and love it. For quiet, unassuming, less frenetic guys like me, a nice condo, townhouse, or detached home in a quiet tree-lined street in Forest Hills Gardens may be the pot of gold.

All good to go.

Yes miles, bayside, douglaston, fresh meadows all lovely areas of queens but almost out of reach for middle class people - I was looking just today at homes for sale there - 785k for a 4 bedroom in Whitestone - how crazy is that - I really dislike the cold but if I could have a home here where my boys could play in the basement in the winter I would stay but I can't afford to stay here and buy - This is what is most dissapointing -

Anyway, I think I will be fine with the heat I just hope the job market gets a little hotter(easier) so that I can live ther comfortably.

Know what you mean, Chelsa...well, I pray that the job market in Fort Lauderdale gets as hot as the temperature!!!!! A hot job market in a hot place for a warm-hearted lady...now that'd make South Florida a positive steamy place to be, won't it?!
