I believe you have to take the FL certification. I'm not sure you have to be there though. Honestly though, look into another area of Florida. Fort Myers is not what's happening. There are no jobs, the economy is in the crapper, and it's a mess of foreclosed homes and crime. My mom is a teacher as well and made the mistake of looking into Fort Myers to get a teaching job. We barely could pay the bills while we there because in the 8 months we were there she couldn't get hired. And she has a master's degree. You should look into the Tampa area or St. Petersburg, Palm Beach County area, Sarasota, Melbourne-Palm Bay area, Daytona Beach area, and maybe Tallahassee. Actually, no. Don't go there. Basically look into anywhere but Miami Dade, Fort Myers, & Tallahassee.

I was a teacher in NY. I moved to Florida from NY. NY is a reciprocal state. I applied for a transfer of certification and just had to pay a fee. I did not have to take the Florida test. I transferred 3 certifications, Elementary, Business and Marketing. I also had to pay for fingerprints and a background check. You can do everything from up North online. Here is the web site: Educator Certification

What area are you cerfitied in? What school districts are you looking to apply in? They all have online applications. You have to get references, transcripts and provide information. I applied at Sarasota County Schools and Charlote County Schools before I moved here. I came down for an interview and got offered the job in May and started the following Aug. when school started. Best of luck. If I can answer any other questions, let me know.
