Sometimes yard care and gardening are trial and error. Sometime it depends on the year --drought, too much rain, etc. Seriously -- the best thing I can recommend are seminars and classes at local garden centers and nurseries. I have always learned a lot from these businesses. They know the ins and outs of your local soil, growth zones, etc. Good luck!
Where can I find some classes like this? Is it a demo or some courses and you have to pay for attending?
Most of the things I've taken have been free. If a lot of materials were involved I may have paid a nominal fee for supplies. Just check the nurseries in your area. I've even seen Lowes and Home Depot schedule plant classes sometimes.
You might want to check with your extension service. I've never taken these but a lot of people love them. Who knows? You might become a master gardener.

If you have the time and the will to care for it, you can do a better job than most landscaping companies. I got tired of my lawn care company doing shoddy work and not having the answer to simple questions and decided this year to go back to doing it myself. And then I got busy and didn't have the time/energy to do it. The lawn shows it! Lawn care companies are good at one thing: consistency. They'll show up and do their job regularly, no matter how busy you are. But if you can devote a few hours a week to your lawn, there's no reason you can't do it yourself -- and you'll get some exercise in the process.
As has been noted, your county extension office can answer most questions you have. If you get into it, Master Gardeners in your area may offer a course. I know they do here.
Thanks for all your replies, I found them very informative and helpful
