Wondering if anyone can give me a ballpark on pruning a cherry tree? I would have it basically pruned down to be smaller all around. I know it will vary based on some things, but wanted just an idea what people might have paid. The tallest part of the tree is equal to the second story of a house.

Outside of most metro areas in the US, I would charge $140-$160 ballpark. Could be a bit higher in some areas.

Your locale probably influences it a lot. What about asking in your area's subforum what people have paid and who did the work? Two birds with one stone.

The trick is going to be finding someone who knows how to prune a cherry tree correctly and who doesn't just get in there and start hacking off everything.

My suggestion would be to go to a fruit growers forum and see if they know of anyone in your area.

And veering off topic, the barbecue crowd would love to have some of that cherry wood you are cutting off the tree. If you are really lucky, you might find someone who knows how to prune and will give you a slight discount if you let them have the wood that is pruned off. Or at least find some one who will haul off the trimmings for no charge.

All depends on where you live because the prices can vary, just call around and get estimates.

It depends on where you are and if your tree will require special equipment to get at it.

If you want a ballpark figure you need to provide your location.

I learned to prune as a kid, when we had 40+ fruit trees, and I did all of the pruning. Since then I still prune my few trees, pruned my parents trees, and also do grafting for friends and relatives. Based on an average-sized cherry tree such as my neighbor has across the street, it would be at least $200 before I would even think about it. Then from there it depends on the location (accessibility), how big it is, the weather in early spring when it has to be done. My best guess would be $300-700 for a knowledgeable person. Those guys hanging around at the Home Depot parking lot might do it for $30/hr, but you get what you pay for.

$200 should do a hatchet job.
