There usually is a snow storm & cold snap before Halloween.
Watch the forecast or get a weather app like weatherbug & put in some of the towns along the way. Then you'll get alerts for bad weather ahead of time. Also check Montana traveler information https://www.mdt.mt.gov/travinfo/ & download their app so you can quickly check current road conditions. Always watch for black ice warnings. If it snows a lot or is quite icy, many passes & steep grades on highways will have the chains required on all towing units law in effect.
The mountains are probably at least 8,500 feet. You can see snow on the mountain peaks, I'd guess 10,000+. Snow at 6,000 puts it on a lot of highways. Montana has excellent snow removal crews. But give yourself an extra day in your schedule in case there is a major storm. Then just park it & stay in a hotel and by the next day the roads will be plowed & sanded. Montana is not like Wyoming where the wind will blow them shut again, so waiting a day usually pays off.
MT will be probably be the place to get a room of I go that way, it's tiring on that route, though I may go 80 or UT/OR. I'll try weatherbug.
kynight, just wondering about something. Are you moving by yourself? If not, had you considered just renting a U-Haul truck and have one of you drive the truck and the other drive the Silverado?
The one way trailer is 506 including tax, a uhaul truck is around 1600 for the one way. I considered it but it's a lot more money, gas would be crazy high to drive both or even haul the silverado.
You're better off getting rid of the following items:
full size sofa
refridgirator (modern bulky one)
queen bed
bunk bed
6' long drawers (2 of them)
a recliner
eating table with 2 chairs
boxes (10)
totes (10)
It's quality furniture so the value is higher than renting a truck or trailer. I'll probabaly take the most valuable and leave a couple things behind.
We will probably drive to the grand canyon to stay south while driving, then go through utah for scenery on the way to northwest washington.
