Nevada, New Mexico, and Arizona are states with a VERY high percentage of people living in urban areas since most of these states are empty desert and do not have a lot of small rural towns like you have in places like Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Georgia, etc. 90% of the people in NEvada live in the Las Vegas and Reno metro areas. Almost everyone in Arizona lives in Phoenix or Tucson though Arizona does have more smaller cities like Flagstaff and Kingman. The Mexican border area of New MExico and Arizona also contributes highly to the crime stats.
Maryland is up there mainly because Baltimore City and Prince George's County greatly throw off the statewide stats since these two areas are so crime-ridden. Baltimore regularly sees over 250 murders a year. If Washington DC was considered a state it would be the most dangerous.
