pen and pin do not sound alike, same with tent and tint
thought rhymes with lot
don and dawn are pronounced the same
collar and caller are prouncounced the same
on, lawn, and john all rhyme
mary, merry, and marry are all pronounced the same
heel and hill are pronounced very differently
bother rhymes with father

How are any of these "weird?" That is the normal way to pronounce those words.
When I moved from WNY to NC I said el-em-en-tARY school to my students and they all laughed at me...it's el-em-entREE!! I never knew their was a different way to say it.
I should warn y'all, that I often say "Y'all" and a few other southern dialects...Please, for your safety do NOT try to picture "y'all" with a New York Accent! It sounds so bad when I say it! lol!
I once heard someone explain that in a part of the country--I think it was somewhere in the Midwest--people pronounce the word spelled M-I-L-K as "melk." To me, that's one of the weirdest things I ever heard!
