I always go by murder statistics if I want to compare crime across cities because the other categories are far more likely to be subject to recording/reporting biases.
As it stands, Memphis had 90 murders over the entire year for almost 700,000 people. That's average. Nothing to write home about either way. Memphis really isn't one of the most "dangerous" cities in the USA.
Memphis is, imo, the most authentic southern city (with a big name). Atlanta has been overtaken by transplants. Houston was in Texas to begin with, heavy with transplants and immigrants as well. New Orleans was always kind of funky, marched to its own beat. And Miami really shouldn't be in the conversation. And finally, Jackson is just too small and unheard of. Birmingham maybe another contender.
Orange County is known for being full of Republican, SUV driving, very nuclear, "typical" family, with snooty soccer mums and cheerleader daughters. This tends to be true in the more wealthier areas, whereas where I live is a more lower class suburb which I don't know where it falls exactly.
