There exist many "what is the south" threads. I started a "what is the north" thread. Time for the west to get some attention!

What states do you consider western?

I have included some Midwest and western south states for the broadest of fair definitions.

EDIT: I accidentally forgot to click "allow multiple choice" and there seems to be NO way to change it. Sorry folks...

very very very important note: This is NOT NOT NOT about what states are geographically the farthest west. This is about the west as a region of these United States of America. Let's be logical about this. For some reason this concept is lost on certain people.

With places like Tombstone (nostalgic Western), the Grand Canyon (superlative Western), and cities like Phoenix (modern Western), the Navajo and Hopi tribes (ancient Western), I'd say Arizona covers the whole spectrum for the definition of Western.

When I think of the West I think of wide open spaces, and every state on the poll have many expansive and open horizons. I love that about the west. The only misnomer I see on the poll is Hawaii.

I would say all but the last 8 on your list constitute the Western states. In my opinion the the Dakotas, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas are more readily defined as the Plains states. Hawaii and Alaska are pretty much as they are.

Everything West from Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana is the West imo.
The most "Western" for me is Arizona.

That's not arbitrary.

"Western" can apply to more than one state. Is there only one Southern state?

And don't roll your eyes at me.

I would say Nevada, Idaho and Wyoming epitomize what I think of as western.

The states I generally think of as the most "western" are Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. I might call these the Inner West.
Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma I'd call the Southwest.
Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho I'd call the Northwest.
And North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas I think are very much transition states, with parts more western and parts more midwestern.
Alaska and Hawaii are their own thing; not really western.
