I drove through southern Virginia on my way to DC. Stopped to eat at a tiny diner and the waitress, while nice as can be said "so, you're from the north?"
And? Making small talk isn't PC now? Probably mild curiosity on her part if they don't get many visitors in the area. It's a pretty common topic of discussion when people are traveling, or at least it used to be. We get people from all over the world visiting here, whenever I hear a unique accent I ask where they are visiting from. Same difference.

I have no accent. I wasn't offended. You shouldn't be either.

Everybody has an accent. If you are in the south and are from elsewhere then you have the accent, just the way it works, lol. I'm not offended just wondering why you brought it up if you weren't offended? More of that danged curiosity!
In terms of rural, small towns it may depend on if the town is a college town or perhaps other dynamics. I can think of multiple small cities not too far from me where seeing interracial couples isn't unusual. I think the history of those places play a part in that.
With the South, it may be a matter of chance in relation to its demographics, as well as having a pretty strong military presence in much of the region.
I think it's a matter of chance in relation to demographics everywhere - not just the south. There are small minded small towns and open minded small towns everywhere - depending on what's close by. GENERALLY SPEAKING, small rural towns are going to be a harder go for interracial couples, regardless of region - many small rural towns are just more closed off to everyone that's not "local" or "like all of us." This is true in every region of the US, not just the south.
As someone whose lived in California, Georgia, and Texas, I can assure you that people are much more racist and judgmental overall in Georgia and Texas than in California.
What the OP and his fiancee experienced in Georgia and Oklahoma happens all of the time in those places--and in most parts of the South, for that matter--regardless of whether you're in podunk Lawton, OK or affluent John's Creek, GA.
People on the West Coast simple don't harbor the same racial prejudices as those in the South. Furthermore, even if a Californian harbored strong racial prejudices, you'd probably never know, as people on the West Coast rarely vocalize their true feelings and emotions unlike people in the East, many of whom let whatever hits the brain slip out the mouth.
Depends where in Texas you are. The big metros (Dallas/FW, Houston, Austin and San Antonio are no worse than what you see in California. In fact, more companies FROM California, the last ten years, have moved TO Texas than any other state by far. These companies include, Fluor Engineering, Jamba Juice, Jacob Engineering, Kubota Tractor, and Toyota's north American HQs (new 2 million square foot campus)
Of the major cities I've lived, I would say Chicago or the DC area (DC, MD, Northern VA) would be good. I see interracial couples all the time here in Chicago. Same goes for the DC area. Nobody even blinks an eye or cares.

I have a southern accent. I just don't look like I'm from the south. Apparently.
Coming into this forum late, really man, any where in the country, interracial couples are every where and have been every where for a very long time, even during the most openly racist times in US history.

NY and California aren't the only places, don't know where you got that idea.
Which is it? You have no accent or you have a southern accent?
People from the north think I have a southern accent. I think I have no accent myself.
