Which state(s) do you feel are the most exotic? Not just sandy beach and volcanoes exotic For me they would be:West Virginia, Maine, Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana, and North DakotaEspecially West Virginia. Do I know anything about it? No. What comes to mind: Appalachian Mts, coal mines, Marshall High, and "Country Road, take me home to the place, I belong, West Virginia, mountain momma... How about you?
Arizona, in all honesty. We have the Grand Canyon, cacti, places where cacti get snow on them, pine trees, copper mines, the Wild Wild West (yay, Tombstone!), San Francisco Peaks (do we really see San Fran from up there? I don't know), waterfalls, one of the hottest states in the US, caves, a ridiculously strong Mexican influence and even a slight Native American one as well (just not as powerful I'd say)... I feel like I could go on and on.
Louisiana would be another for it's French influence, since it's pretty much the only state that really had the influence strongly in the first place and still does sort of. I feel California could be another since it's very distinct.
New Mexico. It has its own architecture, geography-based land use (acequias, tripas, etc.), food and feel, with a strong Native American and Spanish Colonial influence.

Well if you don't want this to be based sandy beaches or volcanoes (you could of just said besides Hawaii lol) then I'm going to say Alaska. A lot of people don't realize its the farthest point east in the U.S., it's partly in the Arctic Circle, the international date line was shifted to accommodate the Aleutian islands, it contains the highest point in the U.S., its coastline is 4 times the length of Florida....I could go on
