What about Morgantown, which is only about an hour or so from Pittsburgh?

I'd look at Kalamazoo MI too. Definitely hits all of your points, and is less than an hour from Grand Rapids amenities and air service.

I would scratch Ithaca and Charlottesville off your list. They are very liberal.

Ithaca within/just outside of city limits is, but go out into the small towns in Tompkins County and they can have a wider range of folks.

Sounds like more of what the OP is looking for actually.

It has way more than 80,000 people though. Maybe Chapel Hill would be a better fit.

Lot's of good suggestions here. I'll through out a few more options for the OP to consider:

Lancaster, Pennsylvania meets criteria. It has a population of around 60,000, yet it's very walkable and not at all crowded. They have a cute artsy downtown that has an awesome farmers market and some neat cafes, galleries, and festivals. Lancaster offers easy, quick access to Philadelphia by rail, so the OP can enjoy big city amenities without having to worry about driving into the city and finding parking.

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and Pullman-Moscow on the Washington-Idaho border could both be good west coast options. Both have vibrant downtown areas. Both are within an hour from Spokane. And both have four seasons but lack extremes. The downside is that they are rather isolated.

Pittsfield, Massachusetts meets much of the criteria. I wouldn't exactly say it has a thriving, vibrant downtown, but it's certainly not a ghost town either. Pittsfield is about forty-five minutes from both Albany, New York and Northampton, Massachusetts if the OP is looking for a night on the town or a bit of entertainment. Fall foliage is spectacular.

The Binghamton and Utica areas also in NY may work. For Utica, you can go to Syracuse or Albany for the airport. With Binghamton can go with either Syracuse, Albany or perhaps Scranton-Wilkes Barre as well. Both have a college presence and have smaller communities with nice Downtowns as well(Clinton in the Utica area and Owego in the Binghamton area). Both also have other places in their metro with a Downtown as well.

You may actually find something just outside of Troy or Schenectady, both of which are within the population criteria and you can use Albany International for the airport.
Not to tell you what to do, but something like this may be an example of a good fit: 108 College Street, Kirkland, NY 13323 It is in between the village of Clinton and Hamilton College: Clinton, New York: Historic Village of Clinton, NY Shopping & Entertainment Travel Guide

Clinton Chamber of Commer - Clinton, NY

Hamilton College: A national leader in teaching students to write effectively, learn from each other and think for themselves.

Some listings in the Ithaca area that fit the criteria: Property Search Results

Just curious OP, but would a quaint small town near cities that fit that population criteria be an option? I only ask because this community in between Auburn and Ithaca came to mind: Come visit Aurora New York | Aurora Arts and Merchants Association

Village of Aurora

https://www.wells.edu/
https://www.wells.edu/employment

2260 State Route 90, Aurora Village, NY 13026
959 Deer Trail Rd S, Ledyard, NY 13081

Anyway, Wells College was an all female college until 5-10 years ago and both of those small cities are about a 25 minute drive away, give or take. Rochester and Syracuse are both about an hour away.
