I currently live in Pittsburgh, PA a very safe, affordable city for a family of 4 with good schools. I want to move closer to my brother who lives near San Jose, Cali but CA is not affordable for me right now. Thinking a nearby city could offer cheaper airfare to go visit him more often.

What I'm looking for:

- Safe neighborhoods
- Quality education
- Family fun venues, activities, programs
- Larger houses within 250-350K budget
- Affordable health, food, dining, etc.
- In or close to a mid-size / larger city
- Close to a bigger airport
- Diverse (we are a professional, educated Latino family)

Thank you!

Salt Lake City. It meets all your criteria. There is a large Latino community there too.

Check out Henderson NV, just outside of Las Vegas. It's a family friendly city of around 300K and nothing at all like Las Vegas itself. It's affordable, has good public schools and safe neighborhoods, good air quality, no natural disasters, newer construction homes in your price range, it's close to the airport which has frequent short-hop flights to SF and the advantage of no state income tax.

Depending on what kind of weather you want, there's a lot of good cities out there for you. I second Henderson, NV. Lots of sun and no state income tax. I hear a lot of great things about it.

There are a decent amount of options, but below are a couple I would see as a good overall fit.

Henderson or Reno, Nevada
Salt Lake City, Utah

Unless you're LDS I'd give Utah a pass.

I third Salt Lake City. And no, your not being a Mormon shouldn't discourage you from looking into it more seriously.

Sacramento is the most obvious choice.

It’s really not like people make it out to be, let’s not be over dramatic.
