Heh...you're from the Albany area, no? I will say that one thing that makes me feel better about being a Buffalo lifer (to this point) is visiting the other upstate cities....

I hate it here, but there you go.
Does your username hint at where you live? If it's a zip code...then this thread is pretty heavy on complaints about upstate NY.

I know I don't exactly apply, but I've lived in the same suburb for 80% of my life, and the remainder in various parts of the same state.

I'm not happy about it, but that's probably just my bitterness towards my situation superimposed.

I do have an ultimatum to myself though: either I move to Philadelphia and it's amazing and keeps me in-state, or I ditch this state for good and move west. I refuse to grow old in a place I am so bitter towards.

I know a retired physician who's been living in the Buffalo area for 45 years.

That place is tempting when you see how much house you get for the money.

Cost of living is undoubtedly low relative to DC (I know a few people who have moved to DC, including my best friend, so I've heard stories). If you're content to remain cooped up in the big house you're implying you can afford...sure, it's tempting. Weather and culture leave a lot to be desired IMO (the former being a more popular opinion than the latter).

Yeah that's where I'm originally from but I have friends/former co-workers from all over upstate and Western NY. They all say almost the same thing. Had it not been for family, they wouldn't live here.

I've lived half my life all over the place (military dad, then husband) including several stints outside the US, but then I've lived the other half of my life in one general spot- NE Texas, Tyler metro area. Though this is not my very favorite part of the US, it's darn good, and I am happy here. But I could be happy in most places, so there's that.

Even though I have lived here half my life, my career involved lots of travel all over the country, so I have seen a lot of cities and metro areas and regions. I don't work outside the home anymore, but my husband's job only requires close proximity to an international airport so we could truly live anywhere we like. That's a nice feeling. He is nearing retirement so one of the things we love to do is go explore other regions of the country and other cities to see if we'd prefer retiring there to retiring here but so far, we're still loving right here.

Oh well, about five more years to decide! Meanwhile, we enjoy scoping out other areas. One that's still in the running is the Chattanooga, TN area. Probably going to go explore NC next. Not the ocean side - we did that last year.

My very, very, very favorite place in the world to live would be the Historic Triangle area of VA but my husband isn't as crazy about it as I am and I'd rather keep him - and keep him happy! Tyler, TX is really nice so it's not like I feel like I'm settling.

I spent 2/3 of my life living in NYC, planning to stay here at least until retirement. I enjoy city living, plus the $$$ is good.
