I know that the OP wants us to state more than the obvious ones like what DC borders. But one fun fact about DC other than that it obviously borders MD and VA, is that for as geographically small the District proper may be, it actually directly borders 5 separate jurisdictions in a circle that total to almost 3.5 million people. In Maryland it borders Montgomery County (over 1 million) and PG County (915k). While sharing maritime borders directly across the Potomac with Alexandria + Arlington, VA ( 350k people), and Fairfax county over 1.1 million people. The city is perfectly situated in the center of the core of population.
Cincinnati's been mentioned, but it's the one that never registered with me much until I had to start travelling for work.
It was interesting to me that so much of the metro is in Kentucky.
I guess I always envisioned it being more solidly "northern" (I'm from the south).
I get your point but to be honest, Northern Kentucky, and the Louisville area are different from the rest of Kentucky anyway! That's like the Atlanta area and the rest of Georgia. Northern KY has more of a Midwestern feel than south. Cincinnati's Airport is in Kentucky by the way...
Chattanooga has the double whammy of being on a time-zone border as well. What's even more crazy, is when you're driving on I-75 coming from Georgia, you pass Chattanooga, then I-75 briefly dips back in Georgia. You're thinking to yourself, "wait, am I going the right way, I thought I just left GA?"
Tallahassee, Florida is only 35 miles from Thomasville Georgia. It is also 450 miles from Miami.
People rant about how Jacksonville is south Georgia despite the fact that it has some nice beaches nearby and is closer to Central Florida than Tallahassee is. Tallahassee has no beaches. Despite being the capitol of Florida, Tallahassee is essentially south Georgia.

You can thank the weird topography of Lookout mountain for that.
These are the two closest cities between WA and ID, (just a bridge apart) though Post Falls, ID up north is a close 2nd.
