Need_affordable_home,
I feel for you and am in somewhat the same predicament. I have discovered that one cannot make others appreciate what a precarious position one is in vis a vis crime and safety.
You are unwittingly challenging many people's deepest and most sincerely held beliefs. They will not allow themselves to believe that some people commit more crime than others, that there is a pattern and it is not random, and therefore believe YOU must be mistaken to worry about it so much despite your income level.
People like us are really suffering from "fear" or are "paranoid". We suffer false impressions because "the news is all about crime and murder".
They are too removed from the underclass and therefore their beliefs can go unchallenged and they cannot imagine what life is like for us. We don't have that luxury when it comes to our safety.
You have to move to where it is cold to be safe, the closer to the Canadian border, the better.
