Yes I'm aware it's in the sidewalk. I prefer to have some trees anyway. It looks nicer, offers shade and I see nothing disturbing about it. Is it bad for the tree? I've seen trees thrive in cities, "IN" the sidewalks.
If the concrete really hurt the trees that much, I doubt you would find this style of tree planting all around the US. Just my opinion though, I think it looks nice!
