I thought this might be a fun one to discuss since downtowns are discussed constantly here. In my hometown, "downtown" was the only truly defined area where "socialites" from all over town flung to when desiring to be around many others on a weekend night. However, here in STL, I would rank the downtown area here as 3rd, 4th, or maybe even 5th spot when it comes to this aspect. Areas here that seem to be more vibrant include for sure "The Loop" and "Central West End" at the very least. One is funky, and one is upscale ... but both have many interesting shops, bars, etc. - and are typically always frequented by people and never seem "dead" ... whereas downtown seems dead most of the time (outside of ball games and Washington Avenue on weekend nights).

So, in your city, are there defined areas that are more vibrant than your city's actual downtown area? If so, what are they? I'd be interested to learn, personally.

If I have to establish a criteria, it would be like this ...
  • defined (preferably named) area outside of downtown
  • more vibrant than your city's downtown
  • vibrant could be thought of as consisting of interesting hangouts, shops, etc. - and never really seeming "dead" on the streets.

Pacific Beach is a beach community that is probably close to being just as vibrant as Downtown San Diego or other areas. It's 2nd to downtown for nightlife and has the most visited beach in the county. Lots of hotels, shops, and restaurants to keep people occupied plus it's near Mission Beach, another vibrant beach community adjacent to PB, and SeaWorld. There is always people out and about during the day at the beach then at night for the bars, clubs, and restaurants. PB also surrounds much of Mission Bay Park where tons of water activities take place.

In Atlanta, downtown is definitely way down the list...sadly, that was not the case 30-35 years ago when Underground was in it's heyday.
Nowadays, the places to 'see and be seen' here are:
Midtown
Virginia-Highland
Little Five Points
East Atlanta Village
Buckhead (due to a massive reconstruction effort it's not the entertainment hub it once was)

Here in Louisville I would guess it would have to be just about anywhere on either Frankfort ave or Bardstown road.

SiliconValley/SF is so bleak in nightlife/talent that guys just take the 45min flt to LV...

LA has great talent, but LA's nightlife is also fairly weak (vs Manhattan/LV), so many also just fly to LV...

LV: the wkend entertainment suburb of LA/SiliconValley....
