I haven't actually lived in the Midwest in a while but I spent most of my first 27 years in NE Ohio and I think I was "imprinted" with Midwestern values. For example, I actually like to smile at people who pass me on the street. But I can't move back to the Midwest...I just can't handle the winters....even the winters in DC are too much for me.

So I'm looking for a city with a midwest mindset (friendly, welcoming, down-to-earth) without the midwest winters. I'm not a big fan of hot summers either but I can handle hot better than cold.

A few other things I'm interested in:

*I want a mid-sized city. Say a metro area of 250,000 to 1 million. Roughly.

*I prefer a place where people are politically liberal but moderate in their own behavior (I lived in San Fran for a couple of years and that was a bit too much for my midwest upbringing)

*I like places with an active downtown area.

*If there are rivers, lakes, or an ocean nearby, all the better!

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Eugene, OR or somewhere in WA, possibly Belleville or Renton. The winters are quite mild, at the most you get a few inches of snow and both states are blessed with natural beauty - rivers, lakes and ocean.

Thanks for the response. I've been to Eugene and quite liked the main library and was impressed by the dozens of bikes parked in front of it. On the other hand, I was disappointed by the downtown. In fact, I couldn't find it so I asked someone for directions. It turns out that I drove right through it without realizing that was the downtown.

Renton looks like it's a suburb of Seattle. Not quite what I'm looking for. Belleville....is that spelled right? I googled it and can't seem to find any info.

Any other ideas?

Try a southern city...midwestern and southern values are really quite similar.
Consider:
Birmingham, AL - a more pleasant place to live than many are aware of.
Mobile, AL - friendly and subtropical.
Pensacola, FL - great beaches, military town.
Nashville, TN - probably the most cosmopolitan city of it's size in the South. Nice downtown entertainment district.
Savannah, GA - increasingly cosmopolitan.
Charleston, SC - very cosmopolitan for a town its' size.
Austin, TX - a liberal oasis in the middle of the great state of TX.
Wilmington, NC - surprisingly artsy and liberal.
Raleigh, NC - same as above...university town.

The problem is that liberals are not very friendly and tend to destroy everything they touch. If you can learn to put up with conservatives you will be a lot better off.

I'm looking at Greenville SC. Nice downtown, near mts, a half day from the beach, lots of Euros for a Southern town.

Oiklahoma is midwest.

Times have changed. Nobody in Ashtabula will smile at you anymore, either.

People who used to love Austin TX are starting to look for someplace else to go.

Almost all the towns mentioned so far are below your 250.000 threshold.

A huge metropolis of 250,000+ AND friendly, down to earth people? Non-existent, sorry.

Too true. The way liberals treat minorities as if they are actual people is disgusting.

I'm a GOP'er. Had Democrat friends over. We talked politics politely and intelligently and respected each others opinions. I have a particular minority customer that I consider a friend. What is disgusting is un-intelligent, narrow-minded people, posting inane, inflammatory drivel. Just let me know if you need a translation "Bird".
