Having lived in London over summer vacation and taking many trips over there, I know the UK better than most people in America and I know London better than most people in America.

"The study, by the UN’s crime research institute, found that 3 per cent of Scots had been victims of assault compared with 1.2 per cent in America and just 0.1 per cent in Japan, 0.2 per cent in Italy and 0.8 per cent in Austria. In England and Wales the figure was 2.8 per cent." [Scotland tops list of world's most violent countries - Katrina Tweedie]

This article was written in 2005, but the only thing that has really changed is that England and Wales are now more violent than Scotland.

OK let me stop you right there. Do you live here? NO.

I've spent alot of time in the US, you have more violence, gun crime and gangs. More poverty than anywhere in the developed world. Our poverty is nothing compared to that of the US.

I would rather have a brawl (most violent crime here is assualts, falls into that category) than be shot like in the US. Look at your school massacres aswell.

Scotland is violent in terms of drunken brawls but not stabbings or being shot that is just absurd. My fiance moved from America 2 years ago and feels safer here, i think that just about says enough.

Detriot, Miami, Memphis, Little Rock don't have a look in.

Considering our population is of that of a small state my country is not more violent than the US, that is just plain stupid.

Those stats are from 2005, our crime rate has went down alot since then. England is now more violent than here, look at London!!

No. It has a higher murder rate.

Look up the assault, rape, and (sometimes) robbery rates of Canada, the UK, Australia, Italy, and other developed countries. They all equal or the US in many violent crimes.

The only thing America has a higher murder rate than those nations. Oh, and if you include the Former Soviet Union, Africa, and Latin America, the US has a much lower murder than many of those nations.

I aint the only person that ever seen an empty azz fridge and I aint the only one who had to pee down the bathtub drain and take sh !ts in plastic bags cuz we couldnt pay the water bill to flush the toilet. Alotta people grew up like this or similar.
You blame America when you should blame your parents.
Priceless.

because as a people we hate punishment, just hate it. our best shot is confinement, but time out does not work. so we got lots of crime. crime does not start in the street it starts in the home and then overflows.

Look at Vietnam and Iraq. Americans do that to each other at home, too.

The possible reasons for US violent crime rate could be:
1. The easy access to assault guns
2. High percentage of poor population
3. Dog eat dog culture (called "individualism")
4. US government does not care
5. People think government is evil and do not want government's involvement
6. People think having guns is a fun, a neceessity, a duty of every citizen, or that guns are toys
7. People are very polirized: Politically, culturally, ideologically, ethnically etc.
8. Highly divisive and often radical rhetoric of government officials that many people swallow to easily without thinking
9. People take themselves too seriously
10. People don't have enough sex

I'll stop here. Make peace, not war. Please don't take it too seriously and don't send your hate letters. I love you all!

Definately agree in the "individualism" theory. There is so much separation in the country. We don't act like a tight community, more like the United States of Lunatics. But if we united a little more it might feel like "socialism" and thats a bad word in America.
