Texas, Georgia, and to some extent Mississippi

Texas: in the South, but not of the South. Most areas I've been to in Texas do not appear to have such a provincial or "cliquish" attitude, a place where people are very much live and let live and friendly. Love the diverse scenery, large cities, and cleanliness of the place. Just a great place! I WILL live there someday! Still plan to be there someday! I'm now at the point of doing (not illegally, anyway ) whatever I have to to end up in Houston. Austin, Galveston, and Ft. Worth are my other favorite Texas cities and I'll certainly visit those locales.

Georgia: ATL Metro, in particular. Enjoyed my time there. Lots of malls to just walk around in (not that I'm a shopper...seriously.) Beautiful ATL skyline, large job market, plenty of nice housing, and the north GA terrain is beautiful! I still stick w/ GA. However, the more I read about Atlanta, the more I'm finding out that much of the metro area has crime/gang habitation spreading in all directions from the city limits. If I moved to GA, I would be right inside (a) I-285 in Druid Hills or Decatur, (b) Marietta, or (c) way, way out in the north GA mountains where I'm surrounded by nobody.

Mississippi: can't beat the smell of fresh pine in a crisp airy sky. I'm not kidding! MS is the only state I've ever noticed this in. It's so beautiful down there and kind of has a "quirky" attitude that is distinctly Southern yet unique Mississippian; visit Jackson, Southaven, and Oxford among other places. A great place to retire. But Southhaven and Biloxi-Gulfport are the only places in MS I'd care anything about living in.

Two states that are friendly but overrated in terms of their friendliness are Tennessee and, where I live, Kentucky. They're decently friendly, sure, but it's almost a phony type of friendly. It's the "nice to your face" and polite goodness but without genuine "pleasantness," if you will. It's hard to make true friends here in Kentucky, that's for sure. Not bad states, but they're just not my cups of tea. I still stand by this. I'd rather live in TN than KY, though. TN is actually one of my favorite Southern states, as long as I'm in downtown Memphis, Nashville, or way, way back in the hills where nobody is around me.
My follow-ups are in red above.

I've also had some online interaction here w/ the Oklahoma folks. Not of the South, but with many Southern mannerisms. They're a very helpful bunch!

Let me give a few more synopses of Southern states I've visited:
  • Florida: In the South, but not OF the South, obviously. The natives I've met from FL have been nice overall. Yankee transplants, on the other hand...most yankees are actually nicer back up north, so I guess IL, NJ, MI, MA, etc. just sent their worst malcontents.
  • Alabama: mixed reactions. In Foley once, some redneck in the passenger seat of a jacked-up pick up truck saw my KY license plate, gave me eye contact and spat at my car as he was blowing by. Also, one of the worst customers I've ever dealt with at work was from Birmingham. Still, I'd rather live in AL than most Southern states b/c of its growing cities and strong universities.
  • Arkansas: I've only seen it from I-40 and I-30, and that was enough. Forrest City is a dump, by the way. I've heard that NWA is beautiful and has a happy populace, though.
  • Louisiana: only driven through. The swamps are very beautiful. I wouldn't live there, though, b/c of the statewide high crime rate and declining cities.
  • Virginia: one of the most beautiful places on earth. Mountains, oceans, forests, swamps, low tidewater lands...it can all be found in VA. That, plus great proximity to DC, make VA great place to vacation!

It's actually kind of sad when you think about it. NC I've heard is such a beautiful place.

He should have posted better pics of Atlanta. All those freeways in the pics make the city look bad.
