I would consider Champaign-Urbana. My husband is in computer science and there are a few places to work here in that field. It has access to a lot of the same stores, etc. as a suburb, but the cost of living is much lower and you can live in the city or in the country and the commute is never terrible. You're also within a couple hours of three big cities (Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis).
