Hi - We moved from Albany , NY to work here in Alpharetta 3 months back. Overall I am liking Alpharetta, but now our office will be relocating to either Buckhead loop or downtown Atlanta. My husband and I both work and we have two small kids ( 3.5 years and 7 months ). We are looking for a single family home in good community ( with at least some indian community around ). School district and commute time are the two important things we are considering. I dont want to commute much and my husband has an option to work from home. Looking for addordable ( ~500K ) homes with good school districts and suburban feel. We are not much into night life etc, so our primary focus is raising a family in a secure area with good quality education. Please suggest some good options. Plus i am not very comfortable driving in traffic areas and high ways.

Welcome to Atlanta.

You'll likely get better responses in the Metro Atlanta forum. The best schools (in terms of test scores) have historically been in parts of Cobb, North Fulton and Gwinnett Counties in my humble opinion. Most real estate agent sites allow consumers to search by school, so it may be best to choose a school that you think might be a good fit and then search for homes in areas served by that school. You can review the school reports here. We are prohibited from engaging in discussions on demographics, but that link may provide the best snapshots for you.

Good luck and Welcome.

Most ITP (Atlantans living inside the perimeter) send their kids to private schools. The city schools simply don't compete with the suburban schools at all. Most of the people we know that have companies moving to Atlanta simply move closer... so for you it might be Roswell/Dunwoody/Sandy Springs -.. still the school quality drops considerably. Johns Creek would move you slightly closer while giving you one of the state's best schools.

I would not say that most Atlantans send their children to private school. I have one daughter in a private school, but the other is at Grady High School, which is a public City of Atlanta school. She went to Inman for middle school. Overall, we have been pleased. She is in the honors program at Grady, which, believe it or not, is fairly challenging. I believe that overall she will graduate from there with the same opportunities that her sister will have as a private school graduate.

Not all badly rated schools are bad and not all great rated schools are great. It's the parent that should really know best. I did find it a bit funny that you countered my argument but then said one child is at public school. Certainly, not EVERY Atlantan sends their kids to private school, but most of my clients do when they relocate from another state.
