I've heard this phrase before....

Oh yeah....

"Arbeit Macht Frei"....German for "work makes one free".

Posted over the gates to the Sachsenhausen, Theresienstadt, Dachau and Auschwitz concentration camps.

I hereby invoke Godwin's Law and declare this thread "toast".

I don't know German, so you're the one who brought it up. Not I.

You're the one who tied it to the Nazis though, not I.

It was a nazi slogan first. You endorsed it.

You are evading the issuse. Tell us, once and for all, what constitutes work, in the context of your statement:

"If you will not work, then you shall not eat."

What, exactly, is the rule about who gets to eat and who doesn't in terms of work performed? Define work, in specific terms.

You can't do it, can you? You're just blowing a lot of dogmatic smoke in support of your own selfish vision of what you wish the world was like.

I've never heard that before though--so I didn't bring it up. This assumes that it is indeed a Nazi slogan. It isn't--to my knowledge.

It is a Nazi slogan. It is above the gates to Auschwitz.

You used it to sum up one of your arguments.

What do you think the Nazi's meant when they used the slogan?

How is what you meant when you used it different from how the Nazi's used it?

Feel free to exercise your right to free speech, no matter how reprehensible...but don't complain when you're called on it.

I don't know--how DID they mean it? I don't claim to know their minds, I can only speak for myself.

You DO know who the Nazi's were and what they did, don't you?

If the Nazi's told their concentration camp prisoners that "work makes you free", you really don't know what they were saying? What they meant by that? What are you, six years old?

OK, here's a freebie: the Nazis lied to their prisoners; work DOESN'T make you free. Those prisoners were literally worked until they were dead, unless they were executed first.

So why don't you? Why don't you explain how your usage of the Nazi slogan is different.

If you can't explain yourself, why should anyone listen to your any of your arguments?
