direct injection + stop-start technology can give us some modest improvements. combine that with figuring out ways to make cars a bit lighter (maybe give up some soundproofing for better mileage?), and we could get an improvement over what we currently have.

Awww come on, you can tell me, tell you what, you tell me how you did this and I'll tell you how I came up with the idea of transmitting power collected by solar cells wirelessly with zero transmission loss for up to a distance of 500 miles.
If you had come up with an idea that could double the efficiency of the internal combustion engine, would you tell?
With all the money tied up in the fuel industry, and the losses that this could easily cause so many companies and shareholders, would you dare to tell?
Hell yes I'd tell. Not my problem if some other company loses out on my invention. That's the beauty of competition.
