They can put 100 of these type of places downtown......but they need to pay the residents of Greenville that will be working there a decent amount of money. We have enough low paying jobs in Greenville as it is, we do not need other business's locating here and paying slave wages just so we can all have another place to eat and drink. Just because many of us are not working low wage jobs does not mean we should be selfish and not worry about the concerns of the other residents here in Greenville that work these jobs! In other words if these business's are not coming to Greenville to be a part of the economic improvement here then they only add to the problem!
its a downtown entertainment area, the only type of business that are going to locate there are restaurants and other low paying minumum wage type jobs.....i'm done, thanks

They can locate anywhere they want........the downtown location is not the issue. No matter where they locate they should be paying Greenville residents a decent wage! When a business decides to join a community.......no matter what part of the community they locate in, the officials in that city should make sure that it's residents will not only benefit from the jobs that are created but also should make sure that fair wages are paid. Years ago when I was growing up whenever any type of business wanted to open up........there were neighborhood committees that would demand that these business's provide a certain percentage of jobs for area residents. In other words these business's had to play ball on the community's terms or don't play at all.

Umm......They were called the mafia and Rudy Giuliani put a dent in their organization by throwing many of them in jail. Racketeering is frowned upon in SC.

As if we don't already have enough low paying jobs here in Greenville.
This is what really concerns me about the city of Greenville and it's priorities towards making progress........such focus worrying about entertainment places that do nothing but provide this city with another place to eat and drink.

Don't get me wrong it is nice to have these places to enjoy after work and on weekends.......in fact there are a few others I would love to see here in Greenville. However this is not the type of economic growth that carries a city or its citizens into the future!

Fantastic job city of Greenville........more low paying jobs for all!
Oh yes, let's put a high-end manufacturing plant paying $30 an hour smack dab in the middle of Main Street.

Geesh dude, come on. Don't confuse simple retail/restaurant developments with real economic developments. I would think you would know the difference between the two.

Actually, if you knew anything, you'd know downtown wait staff does quite well here. There are several at High Cotton, Rick Erwins that make 6 figures yearly due to tips.

Even at a moderate place like Carolina Ale House....work on a Friday evening for 5 hours. Turn 15 tables....each table has an average of 4 people.....each tables bill is 100 for drinks and food. The table tips at only 15%, not 20%. That is 225.00 for 5 hours work or 45.00 an hour, plus the base pay.

Downtown wait staff, for the most part, make good money here.

If you're going to debate, know your facts, OK?

And if they're scheduled for a Tuesday lunch shift from 11-2:30, 3 1/2 hour shift? Turn 6 tables, each table has an average of 2 people, each asking for separate checks, each check averages $9.50, because everyone ordered from the lunch special menu and ordered either water or a sweet tea, because, hey, it's Tuesday afternoon, no one is drinking. Each person only tips at 12%, because they've split there checks and it's only lunch. That's about $13.00 for 3 /12 hours of work or $3.71 an hour, oh, bu wait, you still have to tip out the food runner and the bartender, even though no one ordered alcohol, but one person ordered blackberry tea, and you have to go to the bar for that. So the $13.00 now become $9.00, and there's no base pay, 'cause the $2.10/hr is deducted for taxes, so there is never a check.

This is much more common than you scenario. I speak from personal experience.
