If you can arrange it (and Gunsite is probably within driving distance for you in Phoenix...) it will pay off in the long run to get some professional coaching and instruction, rather than just go to a trap shoot and try to teach yourself.
Some of the best shooters I know had no experience at all and got good training first thing. Didn't have a chance to develop bad habits.
This is the best way to increase you level of skill, the quickest.

You can probably find a good used pump or auto shotty at a pawn shop, gun store, etc.
Hear. Hear. I went to Frontsight in Pahrump, NV, outside of Las Vegas, for my two-day shotgun class. It really gave me the confidence in how to handle a shotgun.
The beauty of a shotgun is that you don't need to pay thousands of $$ for it. Even a $200 Maverick 88 is more than adequate for home defense.
Well there is wingshooting, and then there is defensive shotgun, and while you can use the same gat for both, most people have at least one of each. These are two different classes, two different skills.
It's easier to miss with a shotgun than most inexperienced shooters realize.
