I'm in the Air Force and being relocated to Langley AFB in july. Before flying out to find a place to rent I was hoping I could get some suggestions on areas. I'm looking to rent in an area with nearby restaurants, bars, movie theater, etc. The possibility of renting a house with a yard would be a huge plus. Looking for something around $1000/month and <45 minute commute to Langley.

I also remember the norfolk ghent areas being nice, with an all right commute through the tunnel, but that was 7 years ago and was wondering how traffic may have changed. A nice place in Newport News, Hampton, etc would be great too, but I'm unfamiliar with those areas.

Thanks for the help!

i would stay on the same side of the water, but if you are willing to commute 45 minutes, ghent may be a good fit. on the peninsula, check out hidenwood, harpersivlle area. You may find a house to rent for 1000, 20-30 minutes to langley, close to city center/port warwick, and all the retail on jefferson

I would look along Magurder Blvd in Hampton. Its a safe area with the new Peninsula Town Center close by and Downtown Hampton not too far away. If you want a house you may look at Riverside/Tide Mill Rd in Hampton. Both areas offer easy commutes to Langley.

Rule of thumb in Hampton and Newport News stay north of Mercury blvd.

You could make it to Norfolk no problem some days in 45 minutes but there are pretty much daily backups in both directions these days. You might find it much more practical to look on the Peninsula.

I see that you are not moving until July, but I just did a quick check on the MLS and found 87 rental properties in Hampton, Newport News, and York under $1000/mo. Good sources too look are militarybyowner.com and ahrn.com.
