Just heard on a podcast that Tuesdays are a great day to shop for airfare online. Weekends are apparently the worst.

Makes sense.
Today I was playing around with flight dates again. I can get a round trip from Kauai to San Jose with a connection flight in Los Angeles for $440 when I plug in the same dates and try to just get the flight from Kauai to LAX (no need for San Jose) I get back prices of $800. I swear! Getting checked luggage would be a pain, though I could see me using this method (just never get on the next plane) and only bring carryons.

Quite often I have found that by choosing an airport "near" your final destination instead of the exact airport that you can save a bundle, just by driving a few extra miles.

Creative idea, but be careful about booking multi-leg trips while intending not to complete the last leg. Airlines are wise to that, and could possibly charge you for a revised flight cost. Especially if you try to get back on for the 'return' from the middle stop.

KimoJimo was speaking about the throwaway ticket and I didnt realize this is an actual term. So I did read up on it. Yes ideally I could get away with the first half but on the return apparently your second flight would be canceled if you do not show up. I could try to call them and say I missed the second flight and that I would need to just stay in the city and leave from there. Although I read (which may just be media scare tactics) you can be charged oneway price for missing your connecting flight. I wouldnt bother with the run around. I certainly dont want to annoy any airline I may need to depend on. It would be a nightmare!

What bothered me about this one in particular is that it is a round trip. So even with a round trip you get dumped on. I would think one of the reasons oneways are more expensive is because a roundtrip makes sure you use their company to fly back. I know other things factor in but...

A-B-C , C-B-A $440
A-B , B-A $800
Really, I mean Really??

Good, wouldn't want you stranded or surprised with charges.

From the airline's perspective, it isn't that they are charging you MORE to go to Las Angeles, it's that they have a deal with San Jose to charge you LESS.

Counties (or cities or states?) or even airports will make a deal with the airlines to offer lesser airfare into a specific area, to draw in people who will then spend their visitor dollars in that area. The deals might be temporarily lower taxes or airport charges, so the airline can pass that along and get the traffic into the target spot. The area makes money with car rentals, food, taxis, hotels, etc. all paying more in revenue taxes. Boosts the economy.

But if you don't get into that area, then the airline has no incentive to offer you a deal. You didn't get there, you don't count as part of the deal they made. Kind of like schools who get state monies for the number of students who show up in class, not the number enrolled.

Believe me, I totally understand wanting to have a great deal. But the "sale" is to San Jose, not to Los Angeles.
