I am taking the train from my state to Los Angeles exactly a month from now. I want to leave out of LA to fly directly into Kauai (possibly it could be another island). I only need a oneway ticket. Heres the thing I see one and two stop flight from 8 to 14 hours much cheaper with a price tag ranging $350 to 500. Yet a nonstop for 5 hours is $1000.
I know there is some reason why nonstops are more expensive. I just figure Id ask if there is a way to get the ticket price down?
Thats why they are more, you get there much quicker and dont have to waste your time in different airports waitng on flights. Same thing with first class vrs coach, better service and seating in fc but you get there at the same time. Dont think you will get a fc seat for coach price so good luck trying to get multi stop price for a non-stop flight. If you are flying from LA I take it you will change flights in Honolulu, take the cheaper flight, save a dollar or 2, and see another island or at least the view from the windows.
Hawaiian Airlines has a one-way flight from LAX-Kauai departing on 7/25, with a 1 1/2 hour layover in Honolulu. Price: $474.10 that includes taxes. I may be wrong, but I don't believe there are non-stop flights to Kauai from LAX. I know you can fly into Maui non-stop from LAX. Hope that helps. Best of luck to you.

I would be flying out 7/25 into Kauai
If you can go by train to San Jose instead of Los Angeles and leave on 7/26 or 7/28, Alaska Airlines has some nonstop fights to Kaua'i for $245.
Actually Jonah K, I remember considering this option but the time doesn't line up. Id have to spend the night in San Jose and pay/figure out how to get from the train to -hotel- to airport. It just doesnt work out.
Kelly4Sun , they have them. The price is just twice as much
timbo31958 Thank you, I dont mind flying through Honolulu at all! In fact Id like to make a small pit stop there. In general and for the future I was wondering if there was some way around that price tag. Can't know until you ask. Honestly Im not willing to pay twice as much for a shorter flight when I know shorter is actually less cost considering fuel. That single thought alone makes the flight unattractive to me.
I decided to punch in a round trip 7/25 to 12/22 and I somehow got both tickets non-stop for a solid $727. I'd like to come home around this time anyway to visit. The same flight as a one-way is $965. Since I was ready and willing to pay up to $500 for a one-way with stops, a round trip non-stop at $365 each way is the deal breaker for me!
Now get this...I just hit the search button by mistake and so it pulled up the same dates again for me and the price is now $600. Haha its been about 5 mins at most. I hope it keeps going down. I have a phone interview on Friday 6/24. By next week this time 6/29 I should know if I have the job. $300 each way is so perfect.
There was a time in the far distant past when you could actually buy a round trip ticket when you are actually going only one way, then throw away the return coupon.... It was often cheaper to do this. This way you could buy a deeply discounted round trip ticket....
