Thanks to a lot of serotonin production I've always been a world-class sleeper. Unfortunately, however, I have my own business now and I worry about it constantly. I usually go to bed around midnight and get up around 6:30 but I rarely if ever sleep through the night. I wake up two or three times per night. Sometimes I can go back to sleep, but usually not. I really miss my sleeping days.
I generally get 5 hours a night sleep (I'm 58). I run 25-35 miles a week so I'm active. I do have issues snacking late at night. I get up to pee a couple of times in those 5+ hours. The 5 isn't solid, although I dream a lot. I sort of sleepwalk through the 1st hour after I wake up. I can get stuff done, but I'm not quite in the same room. I honestly suffer the next day if I happen to get in 7+ hours sleep.
I've always slept at least 8 hours...9 if I can get it. I'm not the type who is proud of how little sleep they can get by on. Even in college no all night cram sessions.
oh I know, and Lord knows I used to sleep well and long. Now I prefer to sleep 10-12 hours like I did before aches, pains and insomnia!!
just doesn't happen now. My brain won't shut down.
I've also been blessed that for very little of my life have I had to use an alarm clock. I've been lucky enough to be able to sleep in most of my life.
Depressing question - if I piecemeal the short sleep stints I might get 6 hrs. or so all told (and I know that's not REAL sleep) - been going on for way too many yrs.
Just curious, I've never needed a whole lot of sleep, whereas my wife can't function if she doesn't get at least 7 hours per night.
I am one of those who likes my sleep and as I get older even more. When the kids were little and I was a stay at home mom, I got 6 to 8 hours and maybe a quick cat nap just before they came home from school. I rarely nap anymore but I do like my 8 plus. Bedtime is 8 to 9pm and rise and shine time is 5am. On vacation I will sleep til 6 or 6:30 and maybe stay up until 11 or even a little later.
why on earth does the poll start at 2 hours/night?
Seriously, OP, you started your poll at 2 hours per night? WHY??? (Survey researchers would tell you that it makes no sense at all to start at an increment that simply would not apply to 99.9% of people. So why did you start there?)
No one except the most EXTREME of extreme sleepers (the tiny tail on one end of a bell curve) would regularly get only 2 hours of sleep per night and actually FUNCTION in the real world.
Sleep is very important for humans, and I am always puzzled as to why people think it's some sort of achievement to sleep very very little and again, you know, FUNCTION. Seriously, why is that worn like some sort of badge of honor?
Most of us would not function at all on 2 hours of sleep a night, or 3, or 4, or 5. We might be able to get away with it for a night or two or maybe three, but it would catch up with us.
OP, you sound like you think your wife is lazy or something for "needing" 7 hours a night? Really? If she does and you really need only 2 hours a night (which I frankly do not believe at all), then SHE is the normal one, you aren't. But again, not really believable.
Again, as stated, it's not a good poll - and I so envy people that can get 7-8 hrs. of sleep a night - and agree that it's pretty rude for someone to think that's not normal or what "they" need" - so it's not right.
Although I average 7 hours sleep per night, I usually take an hours nap during the day.
