Denver mostly uses an 800 MHz EDACS trunked radio system. Any scanner that is capable of following EDACS should be able to receive it.

Colorado Springs (in addition to the CO Highway Patrol) use the statewide 800 MHz "DTRS" system, which uses APCO P25 digital transmissions. Some vice groups are encrypted, but most of the system in El Paso county is clear, according to the RadioReference database. A scanner capable of picking up and decoding P25 signals, such as the Radio Shack PRO-106, the GRE PSR-500 and PSR-800 models, or the Uniden HomePatrol should be able to receive it. You can expect to pay around $400 to $600 for a new scanner, or around $300 for a used one on eBay.

This thread brings back memories lol

A lot of us teenagers back in the 90's used to BS on CBs until the cows came home. Our radios was anything but LEGAL! We would channels like a mofo using radios like a Undien President Grant or Cobra 148 ( same basic radio). Then we got bored and started buying export CBs like the Galaxy with built in channels or converting Ham radios to include CB freqs...ya, we paid extra for Hams in order to BS on CB freqs lol Don't even get me started on amps or "Foot Warmers." The object of the game was to blow smoke and walk all over everyone else...hey, I said teenagers lol We would Bleed over everything...I mean everything! I remember one time screwing with people using pay phones. We stopped so a friend could get a coke and we continued talking to some other friends while we waited outside. It wasn't long until e noticed odd reaction from people using the pay phone...just say we stuck around a little longer having fun with people using th pay phone. Now days I don't mess with CBs, even when I got my CDL. I spent most of my trucking time in the oilfield out way from the main hwys.

Used to really love the cb chatter when on trips but in the last 10yrs cb usage on the roads has dwindled to almost nothing, i dont even bother to install my cb any more for long trips and use it mostly for car to car communication on car club runs.

I'm not saying that ham radio should be avoided. I'm just saying that be sure your interest level matches all that goes into Ham radio before you buy anything ham related.
As an alternative, the licensing for GMRS is really easy, is as simple to use as a walkie-talkie, the equipment is cheap, and even though it operates up in the UHF range (about 17X that of CB; 462MHz vs 27MHz), the power limits are 50W (with a whole bunch of restrictions).

Another option is MURS. They are dual-band; 136-174MHz & 400-470MHz.

Personally, I think that CB has run its course, back in '75 when C.W. McCall wrote the song.
Anyone want a free Midland 13-857B? No idea if it still works. Otherwise it goes in the trash.

Can't help you there... only had one CB... mounted it on my dad's tractor when I was a little kid. The Uniden Grants are on Ebay, from $30-$50. I needed the kW punch and 12,000 mile range to pique my interest in (granted, ham) radio....

Can't really do it for free, just shipping needs to be covered... Just trying to unload stuff (like 250 radio/audio tubes), and I feel like I am turning into a hoarder Not sure what you can use it for; too light for a boat anchor, but you could raid it for parts.

Read here:

UPS: Zones and Rates

Would have a friend ship it from Boston, as I am on the other side of the planet, and am only in the New England area once a year or so...
--Can't tell you if it works (though I had her power it on)
--Used to do the Ebay thing, but is now impractical
--If the shipping is less than $5, I'll just send it to you, gratis.

I have so much cr*p I want to get rid of, it is getting to the point where I just want it gone.
