It's a team's nickname. It doesn't HAVE to be associated with the area or even make sense. Besides, before they moved to Phoenix in '96, they were in Winnipeg and known as the Jets. It seems some of you don't know that, which is why it would be much, MUCH better for Winnipeg to have the team than Atlanta.
(Mod edit: Let's keep the name calling off the forum)But you are incorrect a lot of teams do have names associated with thier respective location.

Resorting to name calling... classy.

Where did I say alot of teams were NOT named after something important in their location? I said that they don't have to be named after something associated with their location.

You said this "MUCH better for Winnipeg to have the team than Atlanta". Which pissed me off and was quite unnecessary.

haha why? atlanta never supported the team. why in the world should it stay in Atlanta? Glad to see the team is moving to an actual hockey city where there will be a fan base and the team will be supported.

That was a joke (notice the emoticon) .... BUT dude, even you have to admit, Atlanta's not that great of a sports town. It's amazing they even got another team. I don't think anything in Atlanta would compare to this:

Thrasher is a type of bird, of which there are several species in the US and the brown thrasher gets into canada, but isn't that what you use to cut the wheat that they grow so well in the plains provinces? no, it's a Thresher,

that's it the Winnepeg Threshers!!!!!!!!

the fans want Jets and they should get it. Anything else would be stoopid IMO.

Actually, it's properly called a combine harvester or a combine, not a thresher. The Winnipeg Combines doesn't quite cut it.

Do the Phoenix Coyotes still have the rights to the name "Winnipeg Jets"?

No, the NHL has the rights. So I'm sure they can use Jets if they want.

I thought of Threshers too. After all, the WHL team in Brandon MB is the Wheat Kings. Get an angry looking Caterpillar Lexicon 590R (I believe the largest combine currently produced) holding a stick. I'm hoping for the Manitoba Killer Robots though. It's currently in second place to Jets in a poll conducted at winnipeghockey.com.
