Question for you guys. I need a car to last me about a year while I save up some money for a nicer 2nd car. Would you even chance it on a 1993 Honda Accord with 300,000 miles? Or is it just too risky. I know 300,000 just sounds crazy (as my wife keeps telling me), but I've heard this things go past 400,000. Any insight?

Listen to your wife.

Look at the high 100's.

Or an older Volvo. Those are also high mileage champs, and tend to be priced lower than the Hondas. If you don't care about MPG F150's also go the distance.

Honda's have great engines that will basically run forever. However, just like any other car everything else wears out. I would not buy it unless it was extremely cheap, like $500 or less.

The older F150's with the 4.9 straight six will run forever.

Oh yeah! I love older Volvos... especially the station wagons... preferably early 80's. I like that light yellow color that Volvo offered. The station wagons have tons of space for hauling your stuff and with a roof rack you can haul your kayak or bikes.

-Cheers.

Cannot stress this enough. I've been in a few mega mileage cars, and yes, the engine may run OK, there were so many things that didn't work or were very compromised that I wasn't comfortable riding in them.

I have a buddy who commutes 120 miles round trip to his business, 6 days a week. He buys used Volvos and wears them out. As was said elsewhere, the engines run fine, but he puts so much money (and at least as important; time) into the cars trying to keep them on the road, he could easily buy a newer car and not have to worry about impending problems.

i'm starting to wonder if I'm passing that threshold on my current honda. got it with 100k and basically didn't do anything to it until this past year (I'm less than 2000 mi from 200k). I've spent a bunch of time fixing it up-

timing belt
water pump
head gasket
exhaust header
gear shift linkage
valve adjustment

and that isn't the stuff that happened hear and there over time (CV axles, exhaust and such). I just noticed the other day one of the bellows on the steering rack is toast and it needs new brakes. After I did the head gasket I said "now I'm definitely keeping it till 250k" but with all the stuff thats needed attention since, I'm starting to think I need to draw a line in the sand before it bleeds out forever.

I wouldn't unless it was dirt cheap, try finding a lower mileage one.

X2 on older Volvos. For anyone who is a decent backyard wrench, they are one of few cars to beat when it comes to miles traveled.

They way I read it he already owns it. If that's the case keep it for one more year or until another major repair.
