Apparently, the vent from the tankless hot water heater leading to the outside of the house doesn't protrude far enough from the vinyl siding, and is melting the siding around the vent.

Anyone had any experience with how much it would cost, or alternatively the time and effort it would take to re-install the existing system to make the siding not melt?? Our inspector said he wasn't Bosch (the tank manufacturer) certified, so he wasn't really sure how to estimate it. Until I locate someone to come out an give an estimate, I thought maybe someone here would have some relevant experience.

Somewhere between $100 and $1000.... depending on detail you don't know yet.

maybe you can pick through this stuff and identify what's there and what isn't:
Bosch Tankless Water Heater Vent Kits and Accessories
Bosch Tankless Water Heater Venting

Expense to you? Zero. Seller's responsibility.

Well... the situation is such that the seller relocated more than a month ago to the other side of the country and the seller's agent has been overseeing the house since then, so if any repairs will be made I'm thinking we will just ask for the credit against the purchase price and do it ourselves to make sure it's done to our satisfaction... but I'm trying to avoid the situation that I budgeted $1000 out of the purchase price and something else comes up after the sale during the reinstallation that I'm now liable for...

I agree, as simple as $100 to install a double wall metal heat barrier, up to $1000 or even more to move it and change plumbing. This is common as it's a fairly new technology and for many plumbers it's their first time installing one.

I would anticipate $100 just to show up to your house.

They use a plastic pipe (usually anyway) that is uber expensive. could easily be $1000 if you are replacing the entire exhaust.

As a follow-up, it turns out the seller actually already had the system replaced but never fixed the siding - so the melt look is from some time ago. They offered instead to have an additional piece added to the venting system to make sure it would never melt again and a Bosch certified letter stating the system is currently installed and functioning properly. I guess asking for more money on an already lowball price was very motivating...
