I installed a new 6-0 x 4-0 vinyl slider window. It is glazed with normal glass (untempered double pane) but local code requires tempered glass for where it is. It is my fault for ordering the wrong type. I want the house to be legal so will fix it.

My question is - should I remove the glass panels and replace with tempered panels, or just replace the whole window? Replacing the entire window will be a pain as it will break weather seals but it is not obvious how to pull out the fixed glass panel either. Manufacturer is Pella. I have a call into them about this also.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Wait for the call/email- I'm sure removing the sashes and having the glazing replaced will be less money, heartache, and mental anguish!

Call a glazier or glass repairman & have them order the new glass & install it for you. You can leave the window frames alone. Glass gets replaced all the time, kids are forever throwing balls Or just ignore the safety code.

You're welcome to try your luck locally with glazing, but I'd bet a nickel that re-ordering the exact same window with the tempered glass (and then just swapping the panes) is going to be less expensive. Especially if you catch one of the perpetual "sales" at lowes/depot. Pella is routinely 15% off.

I do hope you will post back with the answer you came up with. I have some windows in my house that are just awful and need to be replaced and I would prefer not to buy all new window frames and just do the glass if possible.

Thank you

You cannot cut tempered glass to size, so you have to order the panel to the exact right size. If you miss measure by even a fraction of an inch, you are out of luck. Some vinyl windows are not replaceable without replacing the entire unit.

My recommendation? throw them out and get some decent wood or metal replacements. Vinyl is crap.

I tend to agree with you, I dislike vinyl and have always had wood. But we moved to a harsh climate - Hawaii. We get 90" of rain a year and the salt in the air corrodes everything including stainless steel and aluminum. Maintenance is a constant chore here.

BTW, it appears the glass panels are installed as a two-pane sealed unit with a metal edge around the entire unit. I am hoping these come in standard sizes.

The manufacturer is sending me replacement double-paned, sealed glass units that replace the ones in the frame. Apparently it is designed for this sort of thing. Not sure on the cost yet. Manufacturer is Pella.
