What Is The Best Mattress to Buy for a Heavy Person? (springs, phone)

What is the best mattress to buy for a heavy person weighing about 280 lbs? Looking for a mattress that will maintain its shape and not form depressions, valleys, and sink holes like many memory foam mattresses do. Some of the inner spring mattresses are not much better because they round off at the edges.

The newer memory foam from Serta (not the Tempurpedic) mattresses come in different firmnesses and the firm model may be for you. Try it, we recently did and was amazed at the difference in comfort and of maintaining it's shape. It moulds right to your body as you sleep taking the pressure off various body parts. Try it, most dealers will let you try them for up to 60 days and if not satisfied exchange it for another type of bed. It beats individual springs from eventually poking you.

I have a 100% latex (not memory foam) mattress that I love. I think a very supportive, sturdy frame is key.

Would you feel comfortable calling around various mattress stores and asking them their opinions? Of course they're going to try to get you in the door and sell you what they have but perhaps over the phone you might get some general ideas of what types of mattresses would suit you best and which you should avoid.

Thanks to all for the input. I need a new firm but comfortable mattress because that soft, spongy and squishy foam mattress from Costco is horrible. Talk about being jacked out of shape and back pain! That foam beastie thing has caused fits with my spine, shoulder and body. The other night I rolled off the rounded edge of it and crashed into the floor. I woke up thinking I was just involved in a horrendous car crash and that my left hip got mangled hitting the pavement. When I wake up in the morning I need physical therapy and pain pills to start the day (thanks to Costco). Last night I tried sleeping on a cheap leather couch in the basement but the cross member boards were sticking up in my back. Ouch! Sleeping on railroad tracks would be just about as comfortable.

I would like to be able to return that memory foam mattress to Costco but I would sob for hours telling them about all the pain and discomfort it caused me.

I've literally become the modern day Hunchback of Notre Dame trying to sleep on that foam beast. Here's what I tell my wife at night "Hey Honey, please hand me another Norco so I can try to get some sleep on this thing."

All of the above is false in my case and I mean false.

I would think that a heavy person needs more support than foam can provide.....so....something with inner springs... but then, on top of that, you could add toppers - probably at least 3" - this way, the mattress will last many years, but you can replace the topper as needed.

We had a very good inner spring pillow top mattress before and I am inclined to go back to one. No more foam. Sleep Innovations never mentioned anything about its foam mattress being hazardous to the health of a heavy person. On the contrary. It claimed that its therapeutic foam mattress would distribute weight evenly. What a bunch of bunk! Plateaus developed in its foam mattress and I could grow rice on each plateau with a little bit of water and top soil.

I highly recommend Sleep Number beds. They're pricey, but well worth the extra $ IMO because of their extended life span and superior comfort. You simply inflate the bed to the number you find most comfortable, which can be anywhere from hard-as-a-brick to soft and mushy, and it maintains that exact shape and firmness level until/unless you decide to change it. There are no depressions and no inner springs to stick into you. If I'm not mistaken, both the queens and kings are rated for 600 lbs. total weight.

If you sleep with a partner be sure to get one with dual controls, so you can each control your own firmness/support levels.

I believe Radisson Hotels use Sleep Number beds, so if you're reluctant to make the investment before checking them out, consider an overnight getaway to test it first.

We purchased our Sleep Number bed from QVC, because they offer an unconditional 30 day money back guarantee; I know they're reputable enough to make good on that guarantee and, quite honestly, I didn't think I'd like the bed and didn't want any difficulty returning such an expensive item. They had the best price as a "special value" when we bought ours, too. The only downside to buying it from there is we had to set it up ourselves, which may not work for everyone. It wasn't overly difficult, but it's a bit more involved than putting together a bottom frame and tossing a box spring and mattress on top. We've had ours for 5 years now and it still feels exactly the way it did when we bought it.

Never again will I ever consider buying a mattress from COSTCO. Their crappy mattress supplier SLEEP INNOVATIONS of New Jersey did not even respond to my complaint and request for an adjustment on its lousy memory foam mattress.
